From milk baths to mermaid tails, from rounded silhouettes to belly kisses from Dad, more and more expectant mums are trusting expert maternity photographers to help them capture keepsake photos of this important phase in their lives.

Just a few short decades ago, however, women who were pregnant were more inclined to cover up for the 9-month haul than to bear their beautiful bellies for the camera. What changed?

It’s often said the maternity photography trend started with actress Demi Moore and a nude photo of her when she was seven months pregnant. That photo, taken by acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz, appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine’s August 1991 issue.

Although very controversial at the time, it has since become legendary in the fields of photography and journalism. More importantly, it served as inspiration for many other pregnant women to proudly embrace the beauty of their changing bodies and the new life it holds.

Here are a few other reasons some pregnant women feel drawn to take photos of their pregnancy:

  • It’s a celebration of the fact that motherhood begins long before a baby is born
  • It’s a way to preserve the memory of when you and your child shared one body – with you as your baby’s ultimate protector
  • You can commemorate how special your pregnancy is, not just to you but also to your partner and your other children
  • You get the opportunity to use a bit of glamour to counter the not-so-fun aspects of pregnancy (yeah, stretch marks and swollen ankles, we’re looking at you!)
  • It’s a chance to enjoy being able to pamper yourself and to take centre stage before it’s ALL about baby!

Maternity photography is no longer thought of as just a passing fad. It has become an empowering celebration of mums-to-be and their big beautiful bellies!
