How to Prepare Your Baby for Their First Photo Session

Tips from a Pittsburgh Newborn Photographer (and Mom of 3!) for a smooth, stress-free experience

Welcoming a new baby into your life is a life-changing experience — and documenting those early days through photography is something you’ll value for years to come. As a Pittsburgh-based newborn photographer with over 10 years of experience, and a mom of three myself, I understand just how meaningful and tender those first weeks truly are.

Whether you’re visiting my cozy, baby-led studio or inviting me into your home for a relaxed lifestyle session, my goal is to make this experience calm, joyful, and filled with authentic moments.

Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your baby’s first photo session — with real-life tips from both behind the camera and from the heart of a fellow parent.

1. Timing Is Everything

Newborn sessions are best scheduled when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this stage, babies are typically extra sleepy, naturally curled, and more relaxed — ideal for those soft, peaceful studio portraits.

For lifestyle sessions, I often recommend waiting until around 3–4 weeks. By then, babies are usually more alert and expressive, which works beautifully for capturing natural moments and connection in your home environment.

Tip: Book your session during your second trimester to guarantee availability. Once your baby arrives, we’ll finalize the date based on their birth and the type of session you’ve chosen.

2. Feed Baby Right Before the Session

A full belly = a happy, sleepy baby.

  • Studio sessions: Feed your baby just before leaving or right when you arrive.
  • In-home sessions: Feed before we begin or during setup — either works great.

Whether breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, it’s always okay to pause for top-ups during your session. Comfort is the priority.

3. Dress Baby in Simple, Comfortable Clothing

For a smooth start, dress your baby in a loose sleeper that zips or snaps in the front — with no onesie underneath. This makes it easier to undress them without waking them.

Skip socks, hats, or anything that might leave red marks on their skin. I have everything we need for simple, baby-led styling.

4. What to Bring (for Studio Sessions)

Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A pacifier (if you’re using one)
  • Extra milk
  • Any sentimental items you’d like photographed
  • A change of clothes for yourself (just in case!)

You don’t need to bring any props, but you’re always welcome to include something meaningful. I have a collection of soft wraps, neutral headbands, bonnets, and textured layers to create timeless, baby-led portraits.

5. Preparing for In-Home Lifestyle Sessions

The beauty of lifestyle photography is capturing your family right where you are — at home.

Don’t stress about cleaning — just tidy a few key spaces:

  • The nursery
  • Master bedroom
  • A living room near natural light

Neutral bedding and soft lighting go a long way. I’ll guide you with posing and gently prompt natural, connection-filled moments.

6. What Should Parents & Siblings Wear?

Simple, comfortable, and neutral is best. Think soft tones like:

  • Cream, beige, taupe, grey, blush, sage
  • Avoid bold patterns and logos

Outfits don’t need to match perfectly — coordination is key.

7. Relax — This Is a Baby-Led Session

With three kids of my own and over a decade of photographing newborns, I’ve seen it all — cluster feeding, fussiness, diaper blowouts, unexpected naps. We move at your baby’s pace. There’s no pressure to perform. You’ll never need to apologize or rush. Every session is built on patience, flexibility, and love.

Let's tell your story!

As a seasoned newborn photographer and proud mom of three, I’d be honored to document this tender chapter of your life.

Whether you’re dreaming of cozy in-home storytelling or gently styled studio portraits, I’m here to guide you every step of the way — with empathy, experience, and a deep love for capturing your family’s story.

Please get in touch to reserve your session. Most families book during their second trimester.
