The life of a photographer often seems glamorous. We capture breathtaking landscapes, document life’s most precious moments, and carry a tool that has the power to freeze time itself. Beyond the beautiful imagery and creative control lies a treasure trove of unexpected perks that make this profession truly special.

Five unexpected perks when it comes to the life of a photographer

1. Instant smiles (seriously, it's magic!)

There’s an undeniable magic to the camera. Point it at someone, and a smile instantly appears. It’s a transformation that transcends language and culture! A shy child hiding behind a parent suddenly beams. A stoic grandparent cracks a playful grin. This transformative power isn’t just about capturing a happy moment; it’s about creating one. The camera becomes a bridge that eases tension and fosters connection. The best part? It’s contagious! Witnessing genuine smiles throughout the day brightens not only my subjects’ faces, but mine as well.

2. Celebrating with amazing people
- ALL THE TIME

Photographers are more than just documentarians; we become temporary confidantes, sharing in the excitement and joy of life’s milestones. From the nervous anticipation of a bride on her wedding day to the unbridled excitement of a graduating senior, and the euphoria of welcoming a newborn into the family, we get a front-row seat to some of life’s most cherished moments. The privilege of capturing these celebrations isn’t just about the photos themselves; it’s about the stories they represent. We hear the laughter, witness the tears, and feel the authentic emotions that come with these special occasions. In a way, we become part of the celebration, weaving a visual tapestry of memories for people to cherish for years to come.

3. My "work" takes me to stunning locations

My office isn’t a cubicle; it’s wherever life unfolds. Imagine exchanging fluorescent lights for sun-drenched meadows or trading the hum of traffic for the serenity of Mellon Park and the scenic bridges of Downtown Pittsburgh. These aren’t just backdrops; they become integral parts of the story we’re trying to tell. A vibrant sunset adds a touch of romance to a couple’s portrait, while the weathered facade of an old building lends a sense of history to a family reunion. The beauty of these locations not only inspires creativity but also allows me to experience the world in a whole new light.

4. "Research" includes trips to museums + gardens

The job description of a photographer rarely mentions “research trips” to art museums and botanical gardens. But for those of us who embrace the artistic side of photography, these “research” adventures are a crucial part of the process. Museums provide a treasure trove of inspiration, from the masterful use of light and shadow in classical paintings to the innovative compositions of modern art. Botanical gardens, on the other hand, offer a kaleidoscope of textures, colors, and natural beauty, perfect for honing one’s eye for detail and composition. These “research” trips aren’t just about acquiring knowledge; they’re about feeding the creative fire, allowing us to experiment with new techniques, and can even spark ideas for future photo shoot locations.

5. Creating safe spaces that encourage authenticity + genuine joy

Perhaps the most unexpected perk of being a photographer is the ability to create safe spaces that encourage authenticity and genuine joy. A photoshoot, especially for those who might be camera-shy, can initially feel intimidating. But through gentle guidance, playful prompts, and a dash of humor, I strive to create a relaxed and positive environment. When subjects feel comfortable and at ease, their true personalities shine through. Their smiles aren’t forced, but genuine expressions of happiness and connection. These moments of pure joy are what make my job so rewarding. It’s more than just capturing a pretty picture; it’s about capturing the essence of a person or a moment, a fleeting expression of happiness that will forever be preserved in a photograph.

Being a photographer is more than just a profession; it’s a way of life. It’s about connecting with people, celebrating life’s milestones, and finding beauty in the everyday. The unexpected perks, from the instant smiles to the transformative “research” trips, make this journey all the more rewarding. So next time you see a photographer with a camera, I hope you don’t just see the equipment; but see the storyteller, the celebrator, and the artist who finds magic in the ordinary!
