history, beauty, and my husband's hometown

What began with a chance encounter in Monaco led to getting married in Olomouc! Sometimes the most memorable chapters of life begin when we least expect them.

In the summer of 2003, a mix of nerves and excitement danced like butterflies in my stomach as Pavel and I stood beneath an imposing Gothic archway of Olomouc’s Town Hall. The cool stone beneath my ballet slippers contrasted with the warmth of my wedding dress, and the hushed whispers of anticipation filled the air. With only seven minutes until the ceremony, panic bubbled up as I realized my brother, who was also my witness, did not know he needed his passport and left it at the hotel. My father, ever the quick-thinking hero, sprinted back to retrieve it, leaving me staring at the clock, fearing that both my witness and my dad might miss the wedding!

Suddenly the processional began and the gentle murmur of voices and footsteps filled the ancient hall. Relief washed over me as I saw my father appear just in time to walk me down the aisle with a red face and a proud smile! The bilingual ceremony was a beautiful blending of cultures, my Czech vows interwoven with English promises. And then the unexpected happened. Instead of traditional wedding music, a comical medley of “Home on the Range,” “Yankee Doodle,” and “America the Beautiful” filled the air, eliciting laughter and cheers from our international guests. As we emerged from the hall, showered with well wishes, the melody seemed to embody the joyful fusion of two cultures celebrating our love amidst the historic heart of Olomouc.

INRODUCTION

With a two-hour train trip from Prague, you can embark on a journey through time in Olomouc, a charming city often described as a miniature Prague with fewer crowds. Imagine hearing the clanging of swords as you walk below the fortified walls, and admiring ornate carvings of the UNESCO Holy Trinity Column. Breathe in the aroma of rum and spices wafting from a local bakery, then savor the local tvarůžky cheese (stinky cheese!). Enjoy lavender wine or catch a show in the Neo-Renaissance Moravian Theater Olomouc. Whether you’re a history buff seeking stories whispered in ancient stones, a nature lover drawn to the enchanting city parks, or simply a curious explorer, Olomouc offers an unforgettable experience. You are sure to create lasting memories in this city where medieval magic meets modern charm.

Olomouc’s pedestrian walkways are my happy place. With each stroll, I lose myself in the pastel colors, vibrant energy, and unique details. It’s like stepping into a charming storybook, minus the hustle and bustle. Starting from either the Upper or Lower Square, I become a wandering storyteller, camera in hand, capturing the soul of this captivating city.

HISTORY

Olomouc, once the capital of Moravia, has a rich history stored in its historical landmarks. Legend claims that Julius Caesar founded the city himself. When exploring Olomouc today, you will find a beautifully preserved historic center with a mix of architectural styles from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque. The Upper Square is at the heart of Olomouc. Here you can gaze upon Renaissance facades that were built upon even older medieval foundations. Look closely, and you’ll find remnants of Gothic arches. Find the time on the astronomical clock on an outside wall of the 14th century Town Hall.

ART AND CULTURE

This charming city is a museum in itself with a thriving cultural scene. Don’t just be a spectator – engage with Olomouc’s innovative spirit! Wander through grand Baroque buildings, each adorned with intricate details. Step inside and marvel at masterpieces in the Olomouc Museum of Art, or be transported to another era at the Archdiocesan Museum. Prepare your curiosity and embark on an unforgettable journey.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Town Hall

From my very first visit to Olomouc , I loved the town hall. At the town hall you will find tourist information office, vending machines with the famous stinky cheese, and one of a kind souvenirs. You can also purchase tickets to climb the stairs for a beautiful view of Olomouc. I love the view from the tower. Please note, there are limited hours so check the schedule. Olomouc’s town hall features a unique blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Mannerist architectural styles, very different from Prague’s very gothic town hall.

Holy Trinity Column

A UNESCO site featuring intricate Baroque details and historical significance, stands tall as a testament to the city’s heritage and artistic achievements. It was built between 1716 and 1754 as a symbol of gratitude for the end of the plague that ravaged Moravia between 1713 and 1715. Interestingly, all the artists and craftsmen involved were from Olomouc, and many of the depicted saints have connections to the city! I heard that an American once offered to buy it but was politely turned down. Some things just are not for sale.

St. Maurice Church

A gothic church built in the 1400s featuring stained glass windows and pointed arches. The organ is one of the largest and oldest in Central Europe. Ascend the 232 steps of the tower for a beautiful view of the Upper Square. Enjoy free entry to both the church and the tower.

Palacky University

Steeped in tradition, Olomouc boasts the second-oldest university in the Czech Republic, Palacký University, founded in 1573. Its prestigious halls have nurtured generations of scholars and intellectuals including my husband! Olomouc’s dynamic and youthful atmosphere is directly related to being a university town.

Saint Wenceslas Cathedral

Dedicated to Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Czech Republic, Wenceslas Cathedral dates back to the 12th century and has seen centuries of history. It was originally Romanesque, rebuilt in Gothic style, and renovated in the 19th century. This layered history is visible in its architecture and makes it a fascinating window into Olomouc’s past.

Olomouc Museum of Art

The Olomouc Museum of Art is housed in a beautiful Baroque building with a collection of over 85,000 works of art. The museum primarily focuses on 20th and 21st-century Czech and international art. The museum also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, which often feature the work of contemporary artists. Here you can also check out the view from the second floor balcony, which offers a panoramic view of the old town.

Seven fountains

Olomouc boasts a unique collection of seven monumental fountains steeped in mythology, each with its own distinct character and story. These ornate structures grace the city’s squares and streets, serving as both beautiful artworks and historical landmarks. Hercules, the oldest fountain, was built in 1688. The other fountains built in the 1600 and 1700s depict Caesar, Mercury, Triton, Neptune, Jupiter, and lastly Arion, just built in 2002.

Aqua Park Olomouc

Olomouc’s water park holds a special place in our hearts! It’s a must-visit on every trip, offering something for everyone in the family. We love the sleek tiled walls, the soothing warmth of the saunas and hot tubs, the adrenaline rush of the indoor and outdoor slides, the refreshing escape of the outdoor pool, and the blissful relaxation of the water massages. It’s the perfect recipe for creating lasting memories together.

THREE PARKS

Three interconnected parks weave a green space around the historic city of Olomouc. The lush lawns, meandering paths, and pockets of vibrant flowerbeds provide an ideal backdrop for a scenic stroll, serene picnic, or simply enjoying the quietude.

Smetana's Gardens

Breathe in the sweet scent of blooming brown eyed susans as you stroll along the winding paths of Smetana Park, named after the beloved Czech composer. Sunlight filters through the leaves of stately trees, dappling the lush green lawns and casting inviting shadows. Lose yourself in the peaceful atmosphere, serenaded by the chirping of birds and the gentle murmur of the picturesque pond, where ducks glide gracefully by. Enjoy a refreshing drink at the charming café and spread out a blanket to enjoy an impromptu picnic under the warm sun. If you’re lucky, your visit might coincide with the renowned Flora Olomouc exhibition which showcases a stunning spectacle of exotic flowers and horticultural marvels. Whether you seek a tranquil escape or a delightful afternoon with friends and family, Smetana Park offers something for everyone.

Czech Park

Adjacent to Smetana Park, Čech Park offers an even quieter and more natural ambiance with winding paths, mature trees, and a children’s playground

Bezrucovy Park

Bezručovy Sady is my favorite park in Olomouc. It feels extra cozy with its winding paths beneath the weathered medieval walls. I heard that as a boy, my father-in-law would play games along these walls with potatoes in his pockets to keep his hands warm. The gurgling stream provides a soothing soundtrack, while shafts of sunlight filter through the leaves, creating a dappled mosaic on the ground. My husband and I walked with a nervous excitement along these paths with guests on our wedding day, as we headed to our reception located in a beautiful restaurant on the wall. My favorite spot is nestled within the fragrant Rosarium, where over 8,000 rose bushes paint the air with their perfume. Bezručovy Sady offers a peaceful escape and a chance to reconnect with nature.

RESTAURANTS AND CAFES

Discover charming cafes housed in historic buildings, enjoying traditional Czech pastries and savoring local craft beers. Immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant atmosphere and connect with the warmth of its people.

Moravska Restaurant

Memories of past laughter and joy linger in the air at this Upper Square restaurant. The decor gives the feeling you are entering a bygone-era, whisked away to a simpler time. But the experience isn’t just about nostalgia; the traditional dishes are consistently delicious, keeping us coming back for more.

This restaurant features a Michelin star chef. It’s been on our list to try for years, but we haven’t been able to secure reservations during one of our stays.

A cute and cozy coffee shop with a whimsical forest theme, smooth coffee, and family friendly atmosphere.

Long story short

Built in a renovated 16th century horseshoe shaped fort, Long Story Short welcomes everyone, while offering a variety of services including: bakery, restaurant, hostel, co-working space, and even a magical garden. We enjoy both the food and the location. In my opinion, it couldn’t be any more aesthetic!

This cozy tea house has quality tea, unique touches, and a welcoming atmosphere. This is a small chain shop that you can also visit in Prague and Pittsburgh (Dobra Tea)!

Cafe La Fee

This is a great little cafe with a lovely atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and the food is delicious.

818 Restaurant

A Chinese restaurant with delicious Cantonese cuisine and a modern atmosphere. Its location in one of the tallest buildings in Olomouc makes for stunning views!

A funky vegan restaurant with moss walls and located on the city wall. You can eat inside or outside.  If you are up for a modern cafe, I highly recommend this lovely spot!

I love your picture of Olomouc, my almost home town, having grown up just a few kilometers from the city, in Hnevotin. I spent much time there, went to school in Olomouc, sisters lived there, one still does at age95+. I knew the original orloj from the 15th century, before German soldiers destroyed it as they were retreating from the Eastern Front in 1945. I also remember the old moat before it was “closed” over. The Communists left the city in shambles. Now it’s very beautiful. I’ve been back there 30 times, the last time in 2008. My husband was from Zlin.. Thanks for your blog, I love it.

It’s so interesting to hear from you! I would have loved to have seen Olomouc before WW2. It must have been even more beautiful!
