As you begin the task of selecting the perfect outfit for your senior session, remember to determine your inspiration. Whether that’s a simple palette, or a fashionable explosion, it will certainly help you decide the overall tone you want your outfit to represent. As a Pittsburgh Senior Photographer I am fortunate to meet high school seniors from across Pittsburgh and am constantly asked for tips on what to wear.
8 Fashion Guidelines:
- Avoid neon colors, and graphic shirts with big words or logos.
- Stay away from fabrics that are prone to wrinkle or cling to you in unflattering ways.
- Choose both casual and formal outfits to offer variety during the shoot.
- Incorporate a variety of colors that are still consistent with your every day style.
- Avoid too much solid black. Breaking up with other colors and patterns.
- Choose flattering fits, styles, and fabrics that complement your natural shape from all angles.
- Don’t be afraid of incorporate patterns, as long as the pattern isn’t overwhelming.
- Be yourself and be comfortable in your own outfit choices so you can focus on the shoot, not fixing your clothes, throughout the session.
High School Senior Fashion Tips for Women:
In your senior session, I would stick with outfits and styles you have worn before, there is no need to go overboard with some over-the-top gown if that is not the real you. My main advice for your outfit is to find one garment that you fall in live with, whether that is a gorgeous color block sweater, Polk-o-dotted jumpsuit, or a paisley silk scarf, search for one thing to base the rest of your outfit upon. You can bring multiple outfits to change into during the session. Feel free to accessorize with hats, scarves, and necklaces, but don’t go overboard. I suggest keeping it simple and finding outfits that reflect your personality and location. Also, remember to find outfits that blend with the season and scenery. For summer and field locations, I would recommend pastels, florals, and denim. For an urban backdrop, I would recommend plain, patternless clothes, and simple colors. For example, plain white sneakers, a suede skirt, or an over-sized denim jacket. For fall and outdoor locations, I recommend chunky sweaters, or plain jumpsuits. For footwear, consider short boots, or even converse. All in all, I suggest a down-to-earth outfit that you will feel the most confident in. Choose an outfit that flatters your figure, and your self-confidence, and remember that no matter what you wear, you will look beautiful!
High School Senior Fashion Tips for Men:
For guys, consider bringing a formal and casual outfit to wear. If your session is in-studio, I recommend a suit for yearbook photos. If you choose to also include a outdoor session, bring along something more casual. I recommend jeans and a simple shirt, maybe even button-down. Now if you consider yourself quite fashionable, I encourage you to express your own personal style, but again, try to maintain a more laid-back approach. On the other hand, if you sneer at style and have no clue where to start, I would remind you to stick with plain colors, and veer away from prints, unless you feel confident enough to pull it off. 😉 If you are part of a sports team or club or activity, I would love if you brought that uniform along for your session! For fall sessions, a simple flannel can also elevate your outfit, or a jacket, leather or denim.
