Behind the scenes of a newborn photo shoot: A look at how to prepare.
Newborn photo shoots are a special way to document details from the early moments of your baby’s life. But what goes on behind the scenes? Here is a look at what to expect from a newborn photo shoot:
Before the shoot
After you book a newborn session, I will send you tips and inspiration in a welcome email and newborn guide. You are welcome to share about your baby’s personality and any special requests you have, such as a few ideas for the types of photos you would like taken of your baby.
This is the time to consider what to wear, if you’d prefer a lifestyle or studio session, how to style your hair, etc. Inspiration an be found on Instagram, Pinterest or on my blog. I suggest starting your planning before baby arrives to try to keep your stress level down. One additional tip, plan your outfits around being in a warm space. I turn up the heat for newborn sessions and ask you to do the same for lifestyle sessions. Prepare any props, outfits, or blankets that you would like to use in the photos. Try to have everything prepared ahead of time so on the day of your shoot, you can stay relaxed.
On the day of the shoot, feed, bathe, and moisturize your baby. Prepare a pacifier and swaddle blanket to help soothe your baby. Relax and enjoy the experience! Newborn photo shoots are a special time to capture the memories of your baby’s early life. 🙂
During the shoot
While some clients are prepared to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing newborn session, others enjoy actively taking part in the creative process. I welcome both ends of the spectrum.
I will do my best to capture a variety of poses and images to create unique and interesting photographs, such as close-ups of your baby’s face, hands, and feet. Let’s also capture photos of your baby interacting with you and other family members! I use a studio light in my studio and natural window light during lifestyle sessions.
A few additional thoughts: Don’t be afraid to ask for breaks. If your baby needs to be fed, changed, or comforted, don’t hesitate to ask for a break. Newborn photography is all about patience. Babies can be unpredictable, so we should be patient and flexible. It can take a little time to get the perfect shot. Additionally, please rest assured, safety is always my top priority.
After the shoot
Around a week after our shoot, I will send you a link to a gallery of images for you to select your favorite photos. Once I receive your favorites, I will complete the final edits.
In conclusion

My newborn sessions are all about capturing natural and relaxed images of your baby and your family. I use a variety of angles and backdrops to create beautiful and authentic photos, but my main focus is on capturing the connection between you and your baby.
I know that time is precious, so I offer a quick turnaround time on my photos. You’ll typically receive your gallery of edited images within two weeks of your session.
