Downtown Pittsburgh Adventures: A Family Lifestyle Session

  • Post author:

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this amazing family for years now, and each session feels like catching up with old friends. This time, we decided to do something a little different—riding the trolley and wandering around downtown Pittsburgh together. There was laughter, adventures waiting in every corner, and plenty of moments that reminded me why I love lifestyle photography!

In this feature, they share a bit about their family, their favorite spots around Pittsburgh, and what it was like seeing their real personalities documented. It’s a glimpse into their everyday life, full of connection, joy, and the kind of memories that make you smile long after the photos are taken.

your family

Can you share a bit about your family and what makes you who you are?

We’re a family of four who likes a simple life …as simple as it can be with two active young boys!

What does “family time” look like for you?

We spend our time together exploring the city, making art, listening to music, goofing around in the living room, reading books, and playing with friends and family. We love spending time outdoors. We go for walks or bike rides, hike in the woods, and explore local parks.

What do you love most about raising your family in Pittsburgh?

We love our neighborhood. There are many families with young children on the surrounding streets. Most evenings we all come out and socialize. The kids play till dinner or darkness. We like that we can have a sort of small-town feel within the larger city.

Where around Pittsburgh do you love spending time together as a family?

Right now, some of our favorite trails for skating or biking are the Three Rivers Heritage Trail in South Side, the Panhandle Trail in Carnegie, and the Arrowhead Trail in Peters Township.

your session

What made you choose a natural, lifestyle approach?

We started doing photo sessions with Laura a few years ago when our boys were very small. The idea of trying to sit them down for a posed or formal photo shoot was unimaginable. Yet, I still wanted photos of us! A lifestyle approach seemed like the answer as it would allow us to capture authentic moments of our life without the formality and pressure. And Laura is so amazing that she can still get a composed family photo in the midst of the lifestyle shoot.

How did you prepare for your session — any advice for other Pittsburgh families booking lifestyle photos?

I sort of have a routine now, having done a few shoots with Laura. We all get haircuts a couple weeks before the session. I pull together outfits that coordinate without being too matchy. For example, we don’t all wear blue or the exact same shade of jeans, etc. I like to mix lights and darks and include a pattern or two. Depending on the season, it can be tricky to know what the weather will be like, so layering can be helpful. The most important thing is to simply let go and relax during the session itself. Easier said than done, but by then it’s too late to fret about clothes or hair. The best images come when you’re just having fun with your family.

Were there any funny or memorable moments with the kids during the session?

During the session, my boys climbed all over these big stone lions that stand in front of a very grand-looking bank on Fourth Ave. I looked up the building later and discovered that they are a landmark and almost 150 years old… Oops! The photos turned out wonderful.

What stood out to you about your experience with Laura Mares Photography?

Besides her ability to capture such beautiful images, Laura is unflappable. When my kids don’t cooperate (or just lay on the ground when you ask them to do a family hug), she takes it all in stride. Her calm, warm presence really reduces any stress that may be associated with pulling off a family photo shoot.

How did it feel seeing your family’s real laughter, hugs, and personalities come through in the final images?

It’s always a mix of joy, elation, and gratitude. I love seeing my little guys’ easy laughter and playfulness frozen in time. I’m usually stunned that we got so many great images. And I’m overwhelmed with gratefulness for Laura’s artistry which allows me to keep these fleeting moments.

What’s one thing you hope your children remember about this season of life when they look back on these photos?

I hope they remember the feeling of being together and how much we love each other.

What’s your favorite image from the session — and what makes it special to you?

There’s a photo of all four of us leaning in together with our older son sitting on his younger brother. When he did it I thought, “Oh my gosh, get off him!”  But of course, it turned out to be a really great shot of the four of us and subtly captures the way the boys are so close and playful.

Is there any final thought you’d like to leave us with?

Just that we love Laura and look forward to more sessions with her over the years.
