Senior Portrait Tips for Guys
Being well prepared for you senior photo session can make the difference between average and fabulous photos. Read the following tips and you’ll be well prepared to look your absolute best at your senior portrait session. Strive for a classic, timeless look. When you book your session let us know the things that interest you. Think of what could be in style now as well as 20 years from now.
Clothing
Bring a range of styles. Casual, dressy and something in between, like an outfit you would wear on a date. Dress in layers. We say that a lot here in Pittsburgh. It’s really important to have layers and texture in your photos because they add interest. By simply adding a neutral color t-shirt under a button down, you’ve added a layer. You can also roll up your sleeves. Put on a jacket or simply carry it. Include a plaid flannel tied around your waist. You can also wear that flannel open with your t-shirt. Wear solid colors, without wording. You don’t want to read “Vans” every time your look at your photos. Proper fit. Lots of guys like to wear a button-down that is untucked. Be sure to choose a slim-fit shirt, even if you are a bigger guy. Boxy shirts are unflattering, making you appear wider than you are.
Accessories
Try on your outfits. It’s frustrating to get to your photo session, only to find out that your favorite shirt doesn’t fit the way you remember. Consider wearing a watch. Time pieces are classic and stylish. Bring multiple pairs of shoes. You should have a different pair of shoes for each outfit. I do not recommend wearing flip flops with your casual outfits unless we are at the beach. Matching socks are a must. If you are wearing slacks, be sure to match your socks to your pants. Black with black. Brown with brown, unless you like wearing dress socks with a crazy pattern because your that kinda guy. Bring a belt. Belts are often forgotten at guy’s senior photo sessions. Bring one. You’ll most likely need it.
Preparing
Cut your hair at least 2 weeks before your session. It gives the skin on the back of your neck and your forehead, that was covered by your hair, time to tan. If you are wearing a hat for your photos, we will do those last, to avoid hat hair. Trim your facial hair. All of it. Moisturize. Your face, your elbows, and even your knees. Trim your nails. Make sure that your nails are trimmed and clean.
Have fun and relax and most importantly, be yourself. Your senior photos reflect who you are, not just what you look like. So when dressing for your senior photo session, be yourself. There’s no pressure on you. My goal to make you look great while delivering an awesome experience. Photographing guys is much different than photographing girls. You’ll look like a guy. You won’t feel uncomfortable or have to do any awkward, girly posing!
