Unleash your inner flamenco dancer in Seville!

Seville, the heart of Andalusia, pulsated with a contagious energy as I visited my daughter earlier this month. Studying abroad has transformed her into a local, and she became my knowledgeable guide. Together, we embarked on a whirlwind adventure, delving into Seville’s vibrant culture and uncovering its hidden gems.

From the grandeur of the Moorish palaces, whispering tales of a bygone era, to the fiery passion of flamenco dancers, Seville was a feast for our senses. We explored sun-drenched plazas, marveled at intricate mosaics that adorned buildings, and lost ourselves in the labyrinthine streets of charming neighborhoods. Each corner unveiled a new delight, a new story waiting to be discovered.

In a quiet corner of the city, we stumbled upon a hidden gem – a wooden cupboard, tucked away in a simple square, that spins to reveal baked goods in small white boxes prepared and sold by cloistered nuns. My daughter, ever the adventurer, ordered “pestiños” for us in Spanish. These traditional Andalusian pastries were a delightful treat deep-fried in olive oil and glazed with honey.

Beyond the sights and sounds, the most rewarding aspect of the trip was witnessing my daughter’s transformation. She has embraced a new culture, cultivated new friendships, and spoke confidently in Spanish – a testament to her dedication and adventurous spirit. Seville captivated us both, but the joy of seeing her thrive in this vibrant environment was priceless.

Here’s your top 10 list to savor your experience in Sevilla.

RIVERSIDE WALK

Orient yourself to Seville with a leisurely stroll along the Guadalquivir River. The gentle murmur of the water blends with the chatter of locals, and a rhythmic strum of a distant flamenco guitar under the shade of palm trees. You can’t miss the 13th century Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold), built to guard access to Seville. Though not actually made of gold, the tower’s name likely comes from the golden glint it gives off in the setting sun. Today, the Torre del Oro is a popular landmark. You can climb to the top for free or with a small donation. Once inside you also have access to the Naval Museum, where you can explore Seville’s maritime past.

As you continue along the river, the imposing presence of the Real Maestranza bullring will come into view. Imagine the roar of the crowd and the artistry of the matador within its walls. Perhaps a visit to the adjoining Bullfighting Museum will offer a deeper look into this cultural tradition, one steeped in history and controversy.

ROYAL ALCAZAR

Step back in time for an inspirational visit to the Royal Alcázar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the stunning blend of Islamic and Renaissance architecture that unfolds before you. This palace boasts a fascinating history, transforming from an 11th-century Muslim fortress to a lavish Christian residence.

Wander through courtyards overflowing with orange trees and calming fountains. Marvel at intricate tilework and delicate stuccowork adorning the walls, and soak in the grandeur of halls like the Hall of the Ambassadors with its awe-inspiring goldwork ceiling. Don’t miss the atmospheric Baths of Doña María de Padilla, a cool, arcaded space that whispers of the palace’s Almohad heritage.

The Alcázar is a sensory feast, a testament to Seville’s rich cultural tapestry. Prepare to spend 3-4 hours exploring the buildings and gardens – you won’t want to miss a thing!

This architectural marvel, adorned with colorful pavilions, represents the provinces of Spain, each a unique tile in the nation’s mosaic. Take a boat ride on the central canal for a unique perspective, gliding past the grandeur and soaking in the bygone era atmosphere. We set up a photoshoot with my daughter and her friends here. Here’s hoping these photos become cherished keepsakes, a reminder of their Spanish adventure.

MARIA LUISA PARK

Seek tranquility in Maria Luisa Park, a haven of verdant gardens, fountains, and orange groves. Rent a bike, wander the peaceful paths, or enjoy a relaxing picnic amidst the lush greenery. Be advised that the park closes for safety reasons during heavy rain showers. While I myself could only admire the park from behind a fence on this particular visit, its beauty is undeniable and promises a welcome respite from the city’s energy.

SETAS

Marvel at Las Setas, an impressive wooden structure nicknamed “The Mushrooms.” This modern landmark offers panoramic city views, shops, and restaurants. Grab a treat on a nearby rooftop terrace at Hotel Abba for a particularly unforgettable experience.

TRIANA

We took a little time to appreciate the beauty of Santa Ana church. A peaceful mass offered a moment of serenity, the lingering scent of incense filling the air as sunlight streamed through stained glass windows. I found myself captivated by the intricate artwork adorning the gothic walls, each detail whispering stories of faith and history.

CERAMIC CLASS

Channel your creativity with a ceramic painting class. Seville boasts a rich tradition in ceramics. Learn traditional techniques and paint your own masterpiece to take home as a unique souvenir. In our ceramic class at Barro Azul in Triana, we not only painted two tiles in two styles, but we also learned the history of the old and new techniques.

Seville’s ceramic history began in Triana, fueled by the Guadalquivir’s supply of clay and water. Although the Romans fired the first kilns, it was the Moors (8th-13th centuries) who made the art form widespread using small, solid colored, geometric tiles to create mosaics. By the 15th century, a newer style emerged of square tiles with raised outlines which kept the colorful glazes from bleeding. Then, the 16th century saw Seville become a trading hub with the Americas. Enter Pisano, the Italian who revolutionized Triana with “smooth tiles” – designed with stencils and painted, forever changing Seville’s ceramic legacy with this new style.

SEVILLE CATHEDRAL

Explore the awe-inspiring Seville Cathedral, the world’s largest Gothic marvel. Be awestruck by the vibrant stained glass windows and find serenity in the courtyard’s orange tree grove. Ascend the iconic Giralda tower – its 34 ramps, not stairs, lead you to the top for unforgettable panoramic city views. To maximize this experience, save the cathedral for later in your trip. From the bell tower, you’ll be able to identify all the amazing places you’ve explored – spot the Alcazar’s distinctive sawtooth walls, the charming, shady streets of Barrio Santa Cruz, and the majestic towers of Plaza de España.

FLAMENCO

Immerse yourself in the fiery passion of flamenco at Museo de Baile Flamenco. Catch an evening show marvel at the rhythmic footwork, soulful singing, and captivating body language of this iconic dance! Forget everything you know about dance. Flamenco isn’t about graceful pirouettes; it’s about raw emotion and percussive power. The dancers transform their bodies into instruments, their footwork a driving beat, their hand gestures echoing the song’s sorrow or joy. It’s a captivating dialogue between movement and music, a story told not with words, but with the sheer intensity of the human form.

CAFES AND RESTAURANTS

Tapas are the heart and soul of Spanish cuisine, and Seville offers a unique tapas adventure. Ditch the full-blown meals and explore a world of flavors in bite-sized portions. Share plates with friends or family and create your own culinary journey. Be sure to try “bacalao frito” – golden-fried cod with a crispy batter that will have you coming back for seconds. And Jamón Ibérico, Spain’s famed cured ham. Seville, being close to the famed producer region of Huelva, offers some of the best in the country.  For the ultimate melt-in-your-mouth experience, seek out Jamón Ibérico de Bellota, made from acorn-fed black Iberian pigs. Seville boasts some of the sweetest oranges in Spain.  So at some point during your trip, treat yourself to a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, the perfect pick-me-up to fuel your trip! And for a quintessential Seville refreshment, sip on a tinto de verano. This simple yet satisfying mix of chilled red wine and lemon soda is a delightful way to beat the heat.
