Visual Storytelling in Photography: My 2025 VOICE Finalist Image

I am thrilled to share that one of my photographs has been named a finalist in the 2025 VOICE Photo Competition. Standing out among tens of thousands of international entries is an incredible milestone. The VOICE competition is a celebration of global visual documentation, honoring images that are intentional, authentic, and deeply moving. To have my work recognized by the Click Community is an honor.

Below is the image that was awards as a finalist, along with the story of the beautiful neighbor who inspired it.

The Story Behind the Shot

The photograph features my neighbor, a woman of incredible strength, grace, and resilience who taught me so much about life. For years, every time she welcomed me at her door, she was naturally framed by the entryway with the senior portraits of her children hanging on the wall behind her. When the time came for her to move, I felt a quiet pull to recreate that image and capture the authentic essence of how she lived in her home.

Stepping inside her new space, surrounded by personal memories, she sat down on the sofa to look at those same four portraits on the coffee table. A painting created by her late husband hung on the wall directly above her, visually tying the family legacy together. By capturing these subtle frames within the frame, I hoped to guide the viewer’s eye through the layers of her personal history.

The emotions in the room were palpable, filled with a heavy yet beautiful mix of nostalgia, grief, and love. I simply wanted to document how a heart can hold the presence of children who have grown up and moved away alongside the quiet, enduring spirit of those we have lost. It stands as a visual testament to how a family remembers and honors its past.

Just a few months after we shared this afternoon together, she passed away. I miss my friend deeply, especially her sound advice. Knowing she is gone makes this image an irreplaceable treasure and a sacred final record of her beautiful spirit.

The Creative & Compositional Choices

I used natural light from the window and kept my wide aperture open to let in as much light as possible and to keep the focus on her expression, allowing the background to blend softly in the background. In post-processing, I leaned into warm, rich tones to evoke the feeling of a lived-in, loved-in home giving the final image a timeless, painterly quality.

A hidden detail you might miss at first glance is the way the light catches the edge of her husband’s painting above, subtly illuminating his brushstrokes while her hand rests just above the children’s photos below. It creates a quiet visual bridge between his brushstrokes from the past and her presence in the room today.
