Photographing this family over the last four years has been a joy. Each session has felt like catching up with old friends—full of easy laughter, playful energy, and the kind of genuine connection that’s a privilege to witness. This year, I had the pleasure of meeting some extended family as well, which deepened my appreciation for the warmth and love that surrounds them.
We’ve explored some of Pittsburgh’s most beautiful spots together—parks, neighborhoods, and hidden corners that seem to come alive when they’re in front of the camera. And every so often, our paths cross outside of photoshoots too—like bumping into each other at Whole Foods on ice cream runs, or spotting one another at a favorite Indian restaurant or grocery store. Those little moments make our connection feel even more special.
What I’ve loved most, though, is hearing their stories: their travels, their work, the sweet rituals of their everyday life, and the magic their children bring into each moment. It’s been an honor to watch their family grow and to help preserve these chapters year after year. I’m delighted to share a little more about their world through this interview.

Tell us about your family.
Life feels busy but deeply fulfilling — a season of building memories, capturing moments, and savoring the simple things. The kids are at such fun ages; seeing the world through their eyes is probably my most favorite thing about being a parent. How stairs can become dino hotels, each stair a room for a dino or a stuffie. The story and magic they weave as they go along make me pause and reflect, reminding me to slow down and see the wonder in the everyday. It’s a chapter filled with laughter, curiosity, and the sweet chaos that makes family life so rich.

What’s something about your family today that you never want to forget?
That we do waffles for breakfast on Friday mornings. Bed time rituals include affirmations and telling each other our favorite part of the day.

What are your favorite ways to spend a weekend as a family in Pittsburgh?
We enjoy spending a morning at the Children’s Museum or the Aviary with the kids and then heading to Bakery Square or Lawrenceville for lunch together.

What family traditions mean a lot to you?
Making a yearly birthday video for the kids — capturing the essence of the year that went by, their milestones, and little everyday moments.
Getting the house ready for Diwali — decorating with diyas, lights, and colorful rangoli to bring in warmth and light.
Making Pizzelles around Christmas and sharing them with friends and neighbors.

What are your family's favorite restaurants?
First Watch and Thaifoon

What is your family’s favorite meal to cook at home?
I want to say Chicken Biryani. Rohan makes it and its an elaborate process. But the piping hot meal is so comforting and perfect for all the different palates we have as a family of four.

What’s a recent moment that made you pause and think, “This. This is what it’s all about?”
I think, it’s when Arjun asked me to stop going to work. To which I replied “Mama works so we can have things. It’s how we buy you all the dinos you want.” To which he instantly replied, “I have enough dinos, mama. Stay home.” In all his wisdom as a 3 year old – I think he put things into perspective for me.

How did you decide to schedule a family session with Laura Mares Photography?
We found Laura by chance. During the lockdown in 2020 – on a random search for a family photographer in Pittsburgh, we happened to stumble across her website. What started as a simple shoot turned into a yearly tradition.

How do these photos reflect your family’s personality?
We’re a tight-knit, loving young family with a dash of chaos — and Laura captures that perfectly. My favorite photo is the upside-down portrait of the kids; we’ve done it for three consecutive years now. It’s playful, a little wild, and so us. I get a little sad thinking that as they grow older, we might not be able to keep up with the tradition, but that’s also what makes it so special — a snapshot of a fleeting, joy-filled chapter in our lives.

Let's tell your story!
Every family has a story worth remembering. If you’re ready to document this season of your life, I’d be honored to create meaningful, heartfelt images for you. Let’s plan your session!
