One of the first questions I hear when planning senior pictures is, “Where should we go?”
And sometimes, choosing a location can feel like a bigger decision than it really is. Your location definitely helps set the vibe of your photos, but there’s really no right or wrong choice. Whether we’re surrounded by flowers, architecture, city streets, or an open field, we’re going to create great photographs together.
The Light Matters More Than the Location
I’m much more interested in finding a location that feels like you than choosing the “perfect” spot. Your location helps create the vibe, but when it comes to beautiful photographs, the light matters far more than having the trendiest backdrop. That gorgeous golden-hour sunlight can make almost any location beautiful.
So, instead of worrying about finding the one perfect place, think about the kind of setting you’re drawn to. Do you love flowers and gardens? Architecture? The city? Nature? Maybe there’s a Pittsburgh spot that already has special meaning to you.
Here are some of my favorite Pittsburgh options for the Class of 2027, along with a little about the look and feel of each.
North Shore & Roberto Clemente Bridge
If you want quintessential Pittsburgh, this is hard to beat. The North Shore offers beautiful views of the city, while the Roberto Clemente Bridge gives us an iconic Pittsburgh backdrop. It’s a great choice if you want an urban feel with recognizable Pittsburgh details and plenty of variety.
Mellon Park
Mellon Park is a favorite for its beautiful flowers, architecture, stone walls, and pathways. It gives us lots of variety in one location, from softer garden portraits to more structured architectural images. It’s a great fit for seniors who love a romantic, timeless feel.
Hartwood Acres
Hartwood Acres is a wonderful choice if you love both nature and architecture. The gardens, mature trees, open spaces, and historic mansion give us plenty of options while keeping the overall feel classic and elegant. It’s especially beautiful when the flower garden is in bloom.
Oakland
Oakland offers a classic collegiate feel with beautiful architecture, steps, columns, the University of Pittsburgh campus, and seasonal flowers. The Carnegie Museum of Art is another beautiful option in the area, especially for seniors who love architecture or a more editorial look.
The Frick
The Frick Pittsburgh grounds offer beautiful flowers, architecture, and classic details. The grand steps and historic surroundings create an elegant backdrop, while the gardens provide softer, more natural options. It also tends to be a little quieter than some of the busier Pittsburgh locations, making it a nice choice if you prefer a more peaceful setting. It’s a lovely option for a polished but still relaxed look.
Mexican War Streets
Looking for something a little different? The Mexican War Streets offer colorful doors, historic homes, tree-lined streets, and a nearby park. While I don’t have senior examples from this location to share here yet, it’s an option worth considering if you love colorful urban details and neighborhood architecture.
Downtown Pittsburgh
For seniors who love an urban look, downtown offers architecture, sidewalks, bridges, and city textures around nearly every corner. It’s a great option if you’re drawn to a more editorial, city-inspired feel or want Pittsburgh itself to be part of your senior photos.
Mt. Washington
Want the Pittsburgh skyline in your senior photos? Mt. Washington gives us one of the city’s most recognizable views. It’s a fun option for someone who wants the city itself to be part of their photographs, especially if you love a mix of skyline views and urban surroundings.
South Side
South Side is a great option for seniors who want an urban, relaxed, and slightly unexpected feel. There’s a mix of industrial architecture, greenery, stairs, and beautiful views that give us plenty of variety while keeping the overall look modern and natural.
Uptown Mt. Lebanon
If you want something a little more local and urban, Uptown Mt. Lebanon is a fun option. The neighborhood offers charming coffee shops, sidewalks, architecture, and plenty of little details to work into your photos. It has a relaxed, walkable feel and is especially convenient for South Hills families. It’s a great choice if you want your senior photos to feel connected to your hometown rather than a traditional park or garden setting.
Fields & Nature in the South Hills
Sometimes the best backdrop is simply a beautiful field. South Hills fields and natural locations give us tall grasses, trees, open skies, and gorgeous evening light. These locations are especially beautiful for seniors who prefer something natural, relaxed, and timeless.
Finding the Right Fit
You don’t have to choose a location simply because it’s popular. Your location helps set the vibe, but there’s no right or wrong choice—and we can create beautiful photographs just about anywhere.

Some locations are ones I’ve photographed many seniors in, while others are great options if you’re looking for something a little different. And if you have a location in mind that isn’t on this list, I’m always happy to consider it.
What matters most is finding a setting that fits your personality and gives us beautiful light. You don’t need to find the “perfect” spot—that’s something we can figure out together.
